Liz Hernández, from Guadalajara, Mexico, has been involved with The Navigators throughout her life. She currently serves in her city, developing Bible studies and encouraging young leaders to deepen their relationship with Jesus. Liz shared her faith journey, ministry insights, and passion for reaching the next generation with Worldwide during the Student Workers Consultation in Zambia.
WW: How did you come to know Jesus, and how did you get involved with The Navigators?
LH: My parents were involved with The Navigators, and I grew up surrounded by Bible studies and discipleship. Although I was familiar with the vision, it wasn’t until I left home for university and participated in an exchange program in Chile that I personally experienced the love and care of Navigators in different countries. It was inspiring to see the same mission expressed in diverse ways. Over time, I began to embrace my faith for myself rather than relying on my parents’ influence. I committed to following Jesus wholeheartedly, inspired by the verse, "I prefer that you are either hot or cold, not lukewarm" (Revelation 3:15-16). This marked a turning point in my life.
WW: How did you begin your current work in Guadalajara?
LH: It started with a small group of us praying and seeking God’s vision for our city. We began meeting for Bible studies, and eventually, a full-time Navigator couple joined us to provide mentorship and guidance. Their investment in us inspired me to disciple others and form a team to continue the work. Though we started small, we’ve seen God bring fruit, with people opening their Bibles for the first time and discovering Jesus.
WW: How did the Student Workers Consultation encouraged you in your ministry?
LH: It’s clear that God is doing something new in Latin America. Though there are fewer people working in university ministries now than in the past, I see a renewed opportunity to share this vision and pass it on to others. We’re learning to better communicate discipleship principles and equip young people to carry the mission into their universities and beyond. This gathering has reignited my passion for mobilizing and encouraging the next generation.
WW: What advice would you give fellow Navigators about reaching the next generation?
LH: Building authentic relationships is essential. While it’s important to provide tools and training, young people need to experience the love of Jesus through genuine community. Many in this generation struggle with forming deep connections, so we must model and prioritize relationships that reflect God’s love. When they see how we care for one another, they’ll be drawn to the Gospel.
WW: Is there a Scripture passage that motivates you in your ministry?
LH: John 13:34-35 reminds me of the importance of love in ministry: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” This truth encourages me to demonstrate Christ’s love in all I do, especially as I engage with the next generation.
